THE COINS WITH MISTAKES ON THEM THAT COULD BE WORTH UP TO $25,000 EACH

  • Rare coins that contain errors can be worth up to thousands of dollars
  • TikTok users have been posting videos about the errors for years
  • One coin, a 1944 Steel Wheat penny, is currently worth $408,000

For anyone that finds a coin in places like a house, car, or pocket should keep an eye on errors that could be worth thousands of dollars.

NBC 6 South Florida reported that The Spruce Crafts, a website specializing in crafts and coin collecting, revealed that one crucial error could be worth up to $25,000.

Multiple coin errors have been identified by The Spruce Crafts and TikTok users, one of whom posted a video about an error in September 2023.

Four of the most valuable coin errors that anyone can come across are the doubled die, missing mint marking, planchet error and strike error.

One coin to look out for is a 1969 Abraham Lincoln penny, which is rare and worth thousands of dollars.

Collectors who are hoping to score a bigger amount of money for a coin should look out for a 1944 Steel Wheat penny, which is worth $408,000.

Doubled Die

A doubled die coin contains duplicated design elements that are caused by a misalignment of the die during the hubbing process (press design).

A TikTok user (@coin.crew) showed off a video and photos of a doubled die silver quarter.

The TikToker recommended that a person first search the quarter and 'look through for the date 1934.'

Afterward, the user suggested that the individual flip the quarter and look for a mint mark above the 'ER' in quarter.

According to NBC 6 South Florida, a Texas woman found a doubled die quarter in her house that was worth $24,000.

Missing Mint Markings

A mint mark, which is a crucial feature that can confirm if a coin is doubled die, identifies where it was made.

It is rare for a mint mark to be missing on any coin, making it of high interest to collectors.

Eric Miller, whose TikTok handle is @thecoinchannel, showed off a 1982 dime he found without a mint mark in a video he posted last February.

According to Miller, the coin was 'a score' and that it can sell anywhere between $150 and $250 online depending on its condition.

He also discussed a 1922 wheat penny and that if it had no mint mark, it can sell anywhere between $500 and $1,000.

Planchet Errors

A planchet is a piece of metal with a rim that has a coin design stamped on top of it.

There can be various planchet errors such as an incorrect shape, wrong thickness and blanks with no coin designs.

These errors are more common than a doubled die coin and many of them aren't worth much more than their denominations.

However, Miller revealed in a TikTok video he posted two years ago that a 1967 quarter on a penny planchet sold for $2,115 online in 2013.

The TikToker added that since the coin was sold for that much in 2013, it could be worth a lot more now.

Strike Errors

Strike errors are sometimes made in the minting process and can cause imperfections in alignment and design.

These errors include straight clips, curved clips, ragged clips, elliptical clips and disc clips.

Strike error coins are not too expensive and many of them are worth between $1 to $50.
